Who are stakeholders in landscape design projects and how are they impacted by the project?

What is a stakeholder?

A stakeholder in the context of your landscape project is a person, organisation, group, or body who has a concern in the project. The stake in business is often a financial one however they are commonly not limited to this. It can be helpful to divide stakeholders up into groups of how much interest they have in the project as Primary and Secondary stakeholders.


Client

This is usually a home owner, business or government body. Residential clients may be a group of people and animals. E.g. Children,  extended families animals.


Service holders

Underneath and above most sites are a web of services owned and run by businesses and governments and individuals transmitting:

  • Water

  • Gas

  • Electricity

  • Sewerage

  • Storm water

  • Internet

  • Tram Lines

  • Train lines


Finance

Finance might be all from the client but often there are others backing the project like banks financiers, councils, government bodies and stock holders.


Constructors

  • Service locators

  • Excavation teams

  • Concreters

  • Electricians

  • Plumbers

  • General labourers

  • Brick, paving and block layers

Wider community

Neighbours may be directly affected by the changes to their views, noise, overlooking and sunlight. The streetscape and the wider community might also be concerned by the changes to the neighbourhood character.


Environment

The environment is often a voiceless stakeholder in construction work and development. Some of the bodies who advocate for it are:
